GardenChef Paul Wenner
first became interested in natural foods in the mid-1960s, when he discovered the relationship between his diet and his poor health. He began teaching cooking classes and educating others about how to eat well. Paul then opened a vegetarian restaurant, the Gardenhouse, in Gresham, Ore. At his restaurant, Paul was trying to figure out how to use the leftover food. One day, he experimented with a mixture of leftover vegetables and rice pilaf. He made the mixture into a loaf and served this "Garden Loaf Sandwich" to his customers. After more experimenting, he sliced up the mixture and served it on a hamburger bun- creating the Gardenburger.
His new vegie buger was met with overwhelming customer demand and popularity, so Paul closed his restaurant and in 1985, founded Gardenburger, Inc. The company went public in 1992 and a year later, it became the fastest growing, publicly traded company in America.
Today, more than 400 million Gardenburgers have been sold in 14 different countries. Paul is also the author of "Garden Cuisine," a book explaining why he chose a plant-based diet and how he turned the Gardenburger into an international phenomenon. The book also features more than 150 healthy, vegetarian recipes.
